English Grammar
“Have and Has for Possession”
Lesson Content
Grammar Focus
We use have and has to talk about what people own or possess: things, family, pets, and more.
- Use have with: I, you, we, they
- Use has with: he, she, it
This grammar is usually used in positive sentences (not questions or negatives).
🔹 Examples:
- I have two sisters.
- She has a new phone.
- They have a big house.
- He has a dog and a cat.
Be careful! We don’t say: She have or They has. Start by thinking: Who is the subject? Then choose have or has.
This grammar is useful for talking about your daily life, your things, and your family which are a big part of English conversation!
🗣️ Why This Grammar Matters for Listening and Speaking
Knowing when to use have or has helps you understand and talk clearly in everyday situations, like:
- ✅ Meeting people:
“I have two brothers. How about you?” - ✅ Describing family or roommates:
“She has a baby.” / “They have three kids.” - ✅ Talking about your things:
“I have a laptop but no printer.” / “He has an old phone.” - ✅ Listening to others describe themselves:
“My friend has a new job.”
“We have English class every day.”
Here’s why it helps: When you hear someone say “She has a dog,” you know they’re talking about her possession. If they said, “They have a dog,” the subject is more than one person. This small word tells you who and how many people are involved which is important for following a conversation and replying naturally.
